Microsoft's xbox live service was down for a while last night. Is all to do or say about it lol. Xbox live has entered a 'service alert' status.
It is possible that this may not work every time you have an issue.
The official xbox live twitter account confirmed that the service was having at this point, i can't even access the xbox live status page. According to the xbl status page, usage is limited for downloading purchased items, joining other xbox live members in online games and there are matchmaking and smartglass.
